Pastor's Grandson Dies In Afghanistan Jet Crash

(Faith Telegraph, July 21, 2009)  One of the Air Force officers killed in the fighter jet crash last Friday in Afghanistan is the grandson of a retired minister at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church, according to the Sanford Herald of Sanford, North Carolina.

Pastor McDowell reportedly described his grandson as an "extraordinary fellow" and a dedicated Christian. "He was a dedicated Christian first, and then he was dedicated to the service," McDowell said. "He died doing what he wanted to do. He wanted to be a pilot. He just loved it."

Captain Mark McDowell was 26 years old and based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. Captain McDowell had been in Afghanistan since May 1. His deployment was reportedly set to end in six weeks.
