Aussie Grandparents Leave Behind Everything To Work In Kazakhstan

janice and peter mau 2010.jpg

(Faith Telegraph, Wednesday, January 6, 2010)  Janice and Peter Mau left behind everything they had  -- possessions, careers, children, and even grandchildren -- to step out in faith and serve God in Kazakhstan. Janice recently contacted the Faith Telegraph to share the couple's website and ministry.

"Basically, a few years ago, we became convicted as we read Jesus' words: 'Go .. into all the world,'" says Janice. "So almost four years ago, we sold and gave away what we had, left our children and grandchildren behind in Australia, and stepped out in faith, heading for Kazakhstan."

Janice and Peter began working with Teen Challenge Kazakhstan, a faith-based ministry that offers aid and support to men, women and families suffering life-controlling problems with drugs, alcohol or crime. Teen Challenge Kazakhstan was founded by missionaries Douglas and Anna Boyle 14 years ago.

"We teach the students English, and live our lives among them, showing them the love, kindness and friendship of Jesus," says Janice. "We have built wonderful relationships with the people here and we are so thankful to God for choosing us to work with him in this country.

"We left behind family and career, and the cost to me as a grandmother, is very great," says Janice. "But God asked us to put our hands to this particular plough and we will keep looking forward and doing this work for as long as He wills it. God loves the people of Kazakhstan and we feel privileged to be here. God is at work!  We are simply working with Him."

Pray for Janice and Peter and their ministry in Kazakhstan.

All I Want For Christmas Is For Santa To Leave

Move Over Truth - Here Comes Santa Claus (Again)!

santa2.jpg

“Jolly Old St Nicholas” is everywhere this time of year. I don't mean the real saint who gave gifts to others and helped the poor. I mean the one who fits in a chimney and flies with reindeer.

His presence around the holidays in America can't be missed, but what about his presence in Christianity and Christmas? Disturbingly, one doesn't need to make a list and check it twice to find it. I am shocked at how suffocating Santa's influence is on a day that we should celebrate Jesus' birth.

This year I have been invited to more 'Santa' parties hosted by churches and Christians than in every other year combined. Santa is the ultimate party crasher -- it isn't his birthday, but he shows up and steals the show anyway.

My family recently bought our first house in rural Texas. Our realtor is a highly recommended Christian who has invited us to a party. (I love Southern hospitality.)

But there is one thing that I don't understand about this party: Our Christian, church-going realtor is having a 'Santa' party. But not just any 'Santa' party -- this one has invitations complete with a Santa picture and return address label. But no mention at all of Jesus.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt: maybe he doesn't want to offend anyone, like the company having a Christmas party that recently asked an acquaintance of mine to provide music but specified that no religious carols be played. That's right: A Christmas party with no Christmas music, in the hopes of not offending anyone.

Well, I'm offended and other Christians should be too! Something is wrong when Santa is accepted but Jesus is not. The only begotten son of God and Savior of mankind is being replaced by a ruddy arctic man with an  uncontrollable appetite for cookies.

Santa presents a worldview that is in direct conflict with Christianity. In the make-believe world of Santa, he keeps a list of everyone's name. He watches you during the year (or someone does – that detail is a little fuzzy) and keeps a record of how many times you do something good or something bad.

And you'd better be good, for goodness sake:  If the good deeds outweigh the bad, you get a reward – presents! This is all eerily familiar to many religions' false teaching that a person can save themselves through good deeds.

You may think I'm being a little dramatic, but here's just one example of the danger of this thinking. While teaching in a Christian preschool/kindergarten class for missionary children, I told the children about Methuselah from the Old Testament.

Genesis 5:25-27 gives an account of Methuselah. It says, "When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. And after he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.” (NIV)

I explained to the children that 969 years on this earth made Methuselah the oldest person in recorded history. A five-year year old boy in my class began to shake his head and announced that “Santa's elves live longer than that,” to which I replied “Santa's elves aren't real. Methuselah was a real person.” The student then became upset and claimed that his parents told him elves were real and his parents tell him the truth, so elves must live longer than Methuselah did.

This exchange took place during our Bible lesson in front of the other students. This boy was so confident that what his parents told him must be true that he was giving the story of Santa the same credibility as God's Word and was not hesitant to defend it by disagreeing with his teacher in front of the whole class. And he was only 5!

I spoke with his parents after class about my concern that he did not understand the difference between truth and fiction and gently suggested that it may be a good time to tell him that the Bible is true but Santa isn't. The missionary mother was shocked at my suggestion and told me that she just can't be the one to disappoint her little boy by telling him that Santa isn't real. Wow.

That was a wakeup call for me. It showed me how far our culture has drifted away from the reality and importance of Christ and Christmas. Not the holidays – Christmas. Believing in Santa and believing in Jesus should never be in the same category.

If there really must be a list that is made and checked twice, I propose two lists: one for the number of  times Santa is mentioned and the other for the times Jesus is discussed this Christmas season. I hope and pray the second list is longer.

Elam: Maryam And Marzieh Told They Will Be Released

maryam-and-mazrieh wide.gif

(Faith Telegraph, November 16, 2009)  Iranian Christians Maryam Rostampour and Marzieh Amirizadeh were told they would be released from prison on Monday 16, 2009, but a "delay in legal procedures" has prevented their release, according to Voice of the Martyrs partner Elam Ministries.

"We are rejoicing at the prospect of their release but would ask you to pray for their full and unconditional release, and for their safety and quick recovery," Elam writes.  Elam reports that their release is "imminent."

Marzieh, 30, and Maryam, 27, were charged with conducting activities against the state, propagating the Christian faith, and apostasy -- leaving Islam.  They were told by a court to renounce their Christian faith but refused.

In October, the Iranian Revolutionary Court dropped the charge of carrying out activities against the state and the case was transferred to a general court for the other charges to be considered.

They have been held in prison for more than 250 days, since March, 2009, and have been denied adequate access to medical care.  Marzieh has suffered from pain in her spine, a tooth infection, and intense headaches.  Maryam was given treatment for severe food poisoning.

Maryam and Marzieh have reportedly been targeted as "anti-government" activists because of their Christian faith.  If convicted of apostasy, the women could be sentenced to death.

Jon And Kate And What God Hates

By Mary Rediger

Faith Telegraph Guest Columnist

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Reality television stars Jon and Kate Gosselin are now close to finalizing their divorce, news sources are reporting. Unabashed and unashamed, they apparently bought themselves new cars to "celebrate" their divorce – then, predictably, blamed each other for spending too much money.

If you are not familiar with Jon and Kate’s unfortunate foray into the national spotlight, here’s a quick primer: Jon and Kate Gosselin have 8 children, twins and sextuplets, with some help from fertility treatments. A "reality" television series chronicling their lives,"Jon and Kate Plus 8," debuted in 2007.

The first time I watched the show, I was impressed with how well the couple parented so many children. When I noticed the Bible verses on their walls and occasional Christian t-shirts worn by Jon, I was pleasantly surprised. I hoped their marriage would be a good example of a loving Christian family.

My hopes were shattered when rumors of affairs and an imminent divorce became reality. My heart sank as I realized another marriage would bite the dust. To make matters worse, this broken marriage was of a famous couple who had even co-authored books now sitting (and collecting dust) on Christian store bookshelves. Like many non-Christian couples, Jon and Kate's marriage was torn apart by an affair that was apparently the last straw in a troubled marriage.

Watching Jon and Kate disintegrate on national television brought home a sad truth: There is a divorce trend in America. Depending on the source, 40%-50% of first marriages, 60%-67% of second marriages, and 70-73% of third marriages in America end in divorce.

Indeed, it is a challenge to find couples who stay married in this country. Divorce is becoming so common in America, that we are becoming desensitized to it. It is becoming the norm. No longer is it shocking, rare, or taboo. Our culture has embraced it and borders on celebrating it.

Divorced woman, especially, are portrayed as strong and able to stand on their own. Divorced people in America are welcomed back into the dating world, with hardly a scratch on their records, free to marry again and again, and more often than not, divorce again and again.

Today, it is not uncommon for someone to be on their second, third, or more marriage, and many give up on the concept of marriage altogether and simply choose to live together.

We know our culture accepts and arguably even promotes divorce, but what does the Bible say about this practice?

Marriage was designed to be an example of Christ's love for the church and Christ’s relationship with the church, according to Ephesians 5:22-32. Verses 28-32 say,

"...He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church."

Christ's love for the church is a love that lasts. Sadly, divorce is a far cry from God's intention for marriage, and leaves many people confused about what "love" really is, even while it leaves many family members wondering where they belong.

According to Malachi, God hates divorce! Hate is a very strong word, but it's Biblical:

"Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.

Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

"I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty.  So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith."(Malachi 2:13-16)

If spouses really focused on making each other's needs their priority each day, and really worked hard to fulfill their commitments to love and care for each another, I wonder if they would have the time or energy left to invest in a romantic relationship outside of marriage.

In the New Testament, Jesus reminds people of God's design for marriage;

Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"

"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

"Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"

Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." (Matthew 19:3-8)

Thus, marital unfaithfulness is sin. Here are two truths about sin I have learned from the Bible, from my own experiences, and from watching others live:

First, one sin generally leads to another until the cycle is broken. For example, many marriages are broken due to affairs and not necessarily spontaneous affairs. Such affairs usually begin in the mind when a person decides they deserve more than the spouse God gave them, and that they aren't being loved enough or getting what they want.

If this isn't caught and dealt with, it can lead to thoughts about how someone else can do more, give more, and be better than their spouse. This inevitably leads them to seek out and begin a new relationship outside the marriage.

This often results in lies and more lies. The person begins to live a double life. Eventually, the sin comes to light and when it does, excuses and blame follow unless confession – to God and to the people involved – and repentance – asking God’s forgiveness and truly turning away from sin without making excuses – come first. If you are in the midst of such sin right now, remember: It is never too late to stop sin before it continues to produce more sin.

The second thing I have learned about sin is that, unfortunately, sin effects more than just those who are doing the sinning. For some reason, when people selfishly indulge in sin, they fool themselves into thinking that it is only going to hurt them. They are wrong. Sin always has consequences, and it does not just impact the sinner.

In the case of an affair that leads to divorce, the spouse, the children, friends, and relatives are all impacted when the marriage falls apart. I speak from personal experience: My parents’ marriage followed the model above and ended in divorce. Their divorce impacted many people.

God gave us a Savior because we are not capable of fixing the disease of sin. We know that God hates sin. And we know He hates divorce. But all too often we don’t even put "sin" and "divorce" in the same category. Too often, divorce is an easy alternative to working through disagreements and problems. Too often, divorce provides an escape from real confession and forgiveness.

Enough is enough -- no trend is irreversible, and nothing is impossible with God. Marriage should be an example of the relationship between Christ and the church, a relationship built on love and meant to last through hardships – for "better or for worse".

Let’s redouble our efforts, in our communities, churches, and in our own marriages, to stop divorce from making a mockery of what should be a beautiful and enduring picture of God’s unconditional love.

Memo To Disney: Miley Cyrus Can't Save The Planet

Disney Asks Children To  Pledge To Protect The Planet

By Mary Rediger

Faith Telegraph Guest Columnist

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

disney loves mother earth.jpgDisney sent out an e-mail yesterday to its "insider" subscribers with the headline, "Disney Stars Join Together With Kids To Save The Environment."  The e-mail announces that:

Disney's hottest young stars are aligning to save the planet in a way that's sure to make a global impact. From Demi to Miley, young people are joining Disney's "Friends for Change: Project Green" and empowering kids to make changes and decisions, because they care and they want to make a difference.

The campaign will apparently ask children to make a "pledge" to "take action" to protect the planet:

This youth-inspired and youth-driven campaign encourages kids to come together and make smart choices within their daily lives. Kids simply register and pledge online to take action to protect our planet...

Am I the only one that finds it disturbing that Disney is registering and organizing children in the cause of environmentalism, asking them to make a sort of "pledge of allegiance" to the planet?

Don't get me wrong. We are blessed to have a beautiful environment. The earth was created by God for humans to dwell in. It is an unmatched dwelling, complete with plants and animals given to us by God. He uses His creation to reveal Himself to us and has given us the responsibility of caring for it.

Indeed, God's handiwork points us to His character:

“For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20).

God also commanded us to be good stewards of the earth in Genesis when He established a system of authority on the earth and placed man over the environment:

“Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (Genesis 1:26)

Thus, those that love God should care about the environment, for it was created by God.  We are called to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us.

However, I cringe when I hear people talk about “saving” the planet. According to the Bible, it is not in our human power to save the Earth. Perhaps we humans can prolong life and impact the quality of our environment, but we cannot save what is not meant to last. Let us not forget that in the end this earth will be destroyed.

We are given a glimpse of the future of our planet in both Second Peter and Revelation:

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.” (2 Peter 3:10-13)

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.” (Revelation 21:1)

If the planet cannot be saved, why is there so much talk about saving it? The current movement to "go green" has some benefits, but there is a difference between good stewardship and trying to save what God has set to be replaced. One is Biblical; the other is not.

The non-Biblical version places "saving" the environment above helping humans. We must remember that our secular media does not present information from a correct Biblical worldview. To many, we are the problem -- there are too many of us, and we are using up too many resources and causing the climate to change with every breath of carbon dioxide we exhale.

To understand the problem with placing the environment above humans and things of eternal significance, we must remind ourselves what God values most: people. People are made in God's image and their souls will exist long after this brief life on earth.

Time and again in the Bible, God illustrates His love for humans over nature. For example, God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, but then provided a ram instead (Genesis 22). In that and every Old Testament sin offering, human life is shown to have more value than animal life.

The world was given to us to rule, not the reverse. The Lord demonstrated His control over the weather and elements with the great flood of Noah's time in Genesis 7; causing the shadow of the sun to go backward ten steps in 2 Kings 20; and calming the storm by rebuking it in Matthew 8 and Luke 8.

Moreover, Jesus' life and ministry were focused on saving the people of this earth.  Our lives should have that same focus and drive.

Is it possible to incorporate “green” methods into our lives without losing this focus?  Of course. There is nothing wrong with “reduce, reuse, recycle.”

But let us never put the environment before people. Our time and resources should be used in such a way as to save people, both physically and spiritually.

The Bible is very clear about where our treasures should be stored:

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21).

Things of this world, including the earth, are temporal. I believe this verse is discussing more than physical treasure like gold and jewels. God is giving us the right perspective on life, reminding us that the earth is not meant to last forever but that heaven is.

We each have but one life on this earth. Let's put our treasure where it counts, where “moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Courage: Iranian Christian Women On Trial Openly Spar With Prosecutor

(Faith Telegraph, August 11, 2009)  Two Iranian Christian women showed remarkable courage and boldness during court proceedings on Sunday in which they were pressured to recant their faith.

Marzieh Amirizadeh, 30, and Maryam Rustampoor, 27, were summoned to answer charges of apostasy, according to the Christian organizations Voice of the Martyrs and Elam.

During vigorous questioning, the prosecutor asked them if they had any regrets about becoming Christians.  "We have no regrets," they responded.

The prosecutor also demanded that they renounce their faith.  However, they stood firm and refused: "We will not deny our faith."

When they made reference to their belief that God had convicted them through the power of the Holy Spirit, the prosecutor told them it is "impossible for God to speak to humans."

Marzieh asked him in return, “Are you questioning whether God is Almighty?”

The prosecutor replied, “You are not worthy for God to speak to you.”

Marzieh responded, “It is God, and not you, who determines if I am worthy.”

After additional questioning, the court adjourned, and the women were told that a judge would render a verdict.

Maryam and Marzieh are now back in Tehran's Evin Prison, where they have been held for over five months without adequate access to medical care. According to the organization International Christian Concern, Marzieh is suffering from pain in her spine, a tooth infection, and intense headaches.

Maryam and Marzieh have reportedly been targeted as "anti-government" activists because of their Christian faith.  If convicted of apostasy, the women could be sentenced to death.

Money Lessons From The King Of Debt

By Mary Rediger

Faith Telegraph Guest Columnist

Monday, August 10, 2009

Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009. It was later revealed that he, the world famous musician who was titled the “King of Pop” and had sold over 700 million records, was hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

I was shocked! It was mind-boggling that someone with so much money also had so much debt.

If Michael Jackson, the man who made more money than I have ever seen, was that much in debt, is less more when it comes to money? In some ways, yes.

Especially during America's challenging economic situation this year, it's human to think that all of our problems would be solved if we only had more money.  But that isn't Biblical thinking.

The answer to money problems is not simply having more, as Michael Jackson's finances show. One can make lots of money and have the same problems as someone making much less. Financial success lies not in how much one has but how one manages what one has.

Financial peace and hope come from following the Bible's instructions on money. You read that correctly: God's Word discusses money and has instructions that are applicable today! In fact, money is mentioned over 100 times in the Bible! That count does not include synonyms such as wealth, gold, silver, and treasure. With those included, the count is much, much higher.

If Michael Jackson was a good example of how not to manage money, the Bible is an even better source of financial advice and guidance on how we should manage our finances.  Here are just a few of the lessons I've learned from the Bible.

Tithe!

God is our provider and tithing is one important Biblical concept regarding money. The word tithe is used over 25 times in the Bible. It was a concept established in the Old Testament. Most Christians are familiar with Malachi 3:9-12 regarding tithe.

The Bible says, "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.  "But you ask, 'How do we rob you?'  "In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you —because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

Tithing is based on the understanding that what we have belongs to the Lord. We are called to give back to Him with gratefulness for what He has given us, and there are many promises (more blessing than we have room for, good crops, a blessed nation, and a delightful land) associated with that act in the above verse.

God's Word mentions tithing 10% specifically in Leviticus. I often wonder how individual and national financial statuses would be different if 10% off of everything received was given back to the Lord and used for His work.

Work!

We must work for money.  Captain John Smith used the scriptural admonishment “...He who does not work will not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10) to encourage farming when setting up his colony in Jamestown, Virginia in the 1600s. He recognized that working is how humans survive. Beginning with Adam and Eve, people have had to work for food and supplies in order to meet their physical needs.

Don't Let Money Rule Over You!

We must not let money rule over us. Money isn't the root of all kinds of evil, but according to 1 Timothy 6: 9-10, the love of it is: “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”  The love of money has very serious consequences, including wandering from our faith in Christ and causing “many griefs”.

Manage Well What God Has Given You!

We must manage our finances responsibly, being good stewards of what God has given us.  Luke 16:10-13 says, “He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much. Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you? And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

According to Luke, being faithful in what one has is more important than how much one is given. As Christians, we must choose to serve God and not money.

There's a cautionary verse about borrowing money (being in debt) in Proverbs: “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7).   It is very difficult to stop being a servant to a lender. The best scenario is to avoid that situation all together. It's not easy to wait until enough money is saved that a purchase can be made without owing anything or researching enough to ensure one won't be in over one's head with various financial decisions, but it is the best case scenario.

Live A Simple Life!

Christians are instructed on how to live in 1 Thessalonians 4. Verses 11 and 12 have specific instructions that are my goals for this life on earth. They say,  “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.”

Notice that the verse instructs us to mind our own business and work with our hands. The result of that is that we will have other's respect and “not be dependent on anybody”. God is our provider and we must manage what He has provided, specifically money.

If In Doubt, Check The Book!

At this point the logical question is, how do I apply this in my financial situation? While it is impossible to address every situation specifically, the best answer to that question is with another question.

The question is, What does the Bible say to do? There are many more verses and instructions than the ones mentioned here. It truly is our guide to finances, inspired by God in His wisdom!

While I believe it is good to have financial advisors and programs about finances, I am concerned that Christians may forget or not realize that the best resource we have regarding money is the Bible. I am amazed at how practical the verses regarding money, tithing, debt, etc are.

I finish this article with a challenge to the reader: search for those financial verses, read them, and ask the Lord how to apply His truth and instructions about money in your life. If you have a family, I encourage you to include every member on this quest.

May we as Christians not be a mirror image of the secular world of instant gratification and increasing debt, but may we be faithful examples, following the Lord's words in every aspect of life.

AIM launched its first Missions Photo Contest in a quest to gather photographs of ministry in action from around the globe. The purposewas to cast a vision for what God is doing in the mission field through a collection of compelling photographs that tell the stories.

AIM founder Seth Barnes was inspired to start the Missions Photo Contest after seeing an image taken of an orphan at a care point in Nsoko, Swaziland. "I saw this photograph and was so taken by it. It captures a soul, a moment, a place and a ministry. It's like visual poetry," he says. Barnes wanted to share this experience with more people -- and he wanted more photos. "As I continued to stare at it [the photo], I thought, 'We have so many good photographers...we need to showcase their talent.'"

The ultimate goalof the project isto publish a book of the winning photographs that shares the stories and images of reaching out to people in need. "I think it will help cast a vision for what God is doing," says Barnes.
