Missions News: Outreaches
Twenty high school and college students just returned from an outreach trip to San Francisco where they engaged in evangelism and street witnessing that focused on offering free cups of Hot Chocolate.
"What we would do is each evening is groups of four would take a canister of hot chocolate and some cups and roam the streets asking people if they'd like some hot chocolate," explains Ben Patterson, director of junior high ministries at Orchard Hill. "It is a great way to open conversation with someone, to ask them how their day has been and to learn about their life and possibly turn the conversation to spirituality."
The "Hot Chocolate" ministry is popular with missionaries at Youth With A Mission ("YWAM") and with the homeless. "Many of the conversations ended with a prayer," reports Ben. "It was amazing how many people asked that we'd pray for them and how much they enjoyed the conversation." [Ed: Chocolate buzz anyone?]
The group spent most of its time focusing on San Francisco's "Tenderloin" district, so called because many years ago the city paid police officers a premium to work in the district because it had so much crime. With that salary, officers could buy a prime "Tenderloin" cut of beef. Today, the "Tenderloin" district is still full of drugs, violence, prostitution and homelessness. Pray for YWAM San Francisco as it continues to make an impact in the Tenderloin district.
