Missions News: Outreach
(Faith Telegraph April 3, 2009) “I hate you and will never forgive you!” Paul screamed at God as his mother died of cancer in his arms. A young boy from a poor neighborhood in Lima, Peru, Paul had seen more than his fair share of pain. His father was a criminal, and his grandmother was emotionally abusive. He had struggled with depression, and had been witnessed to by a cult that left him with many questions.
When missionaries with Youth With A Mission Pittsburgh first met Paul on their outreach to Lima, they had no idea what pain and hardships this young boy had endured.
"We began to answer his questions and we could see that God was beginning a work in his heart," they report. "A week later, our team followed up with him and brought him to church. He loved the church service so we invited him to come to our summer missions program, Joshua Generation, which started the following week."
"Joshua Generation" is a missions school that begins with a 9 day training period followed by a 10 day outreach. The first 9 days is spent experiencing God and learning how to hear His voice. The “JGers” learn different methods of evangelism and how to share their faith.
It was during this time that Paul had an experience with God. "He forgave God and accepted him as the Lord and Savior of his life," says the team. "He also called his grandmother and asked for forgiveness, which then led to his grandma apologizing for the way she had been treating him."
During the outreach, God used Paul to transform the lives of many people by leading them to the Lord. "He is a very good soccer player, which God used during outreach as he helped the team run a soccer clinic for the kids of the neighborhood we were working in," the team explains.
One of the kids he met was named Armando, who confessed that he was being abused by his dad. Paul shared the love of Christ with him and led him to the Lord.
Paul experienced true healing that can only come through Christ, but he didn’t allow that to be the end of his story. "He used his newly transformed life to transform the lives of others" the team reports. "If we allow him, God will use our lives to impact so many around us!"
