(Thailand/Burma Border) Compasio -- a ministry that runs a safe house for women and children at risk on the Thai-Burmese border -- has provided an update on its efforts to find a home, caregivers and funding to rescue and care for several toddlers born and living in a prison:

"The little 'Prison Babies' now have names and faces, and a home full of people who love them.  Yesterday we went to the prison to meet little Rabbit, who’s almost 3, and most of her baby teeth are falling out already, Nong Knight is 2 and a sensitive little guy who bursts into tears often, and Oh Mee Mee, the littlest boy who’s 1 ½ years old, adorable and kind of quiet.  We received three children this time, with more to come in the future.  The other two babies we thought would be coming were able to be placed with relatives."

Of course, along with the joy of rescuing these kids from prison and giving them home, there were a few tears:

"When moms and toddlers said their goodbyes there were a lot of tears.  Prison is no place for children, and as these mothers handed their children into our care, they knew that we loved both them and their little ones and that their babies would be safe and loved.  We are going to do our best to keep these children in a relationship with their moms and will be planning regular visits."

Compasio reports that the kids settled in well for their first evening, with playtime, snacks, baths and dinner.  A couple of the older children from Compasio's safehouse came over to stay and play with the kids the first night.  According to Compasio, "they were a little scared at first and fascinated by the dogs and chickens around the house, since they had NEVER seen the outside world."  The kids also had many first time experiences, such as riding in a car.

prison babies come home.jpgDespite the short amount of time, Compasio was able to get the kids' house in order.  "We’ve spent hours scrubbing it down and getting it ready for the kids. It’s still a little bare, but we were able to get the essentials to get the home running with the donations you sent in!"  Compasio is still looking for a "baby-appropriate vehicle soon, something a little safer than a motor scooter or the back of a Land Rover."  And Compasio is in the process of interviewing a "really sweet local couple for the position of house parents," hoping they will be able to join the project by the end of the week.

Compasio is extremely grateful for the support and prayers it has received, reporting that two of the children already have monthly sponsors.  However, Compasio still needs sponsors for the caregivers and for other children who will be coming to the home."  Compasio is also asking for prayers for the children and the "exhausted" staff, and asking everyone to get out the word about this project by email, facebook, church gatherings, etc.

prison babies come home 2.jpgAs reported previously, Compasio's project to rescue these toddlers from prison was the result of a visit, several weeks ago, by one of its team members to the local jail.  The team member was taking some children to visit their parents in jail, when one of the prison guards approached her and asked why the children were with her.  She explained that Compasio has a safe house for abused and neglected children formerly living on the streets.

Some of the prison officials were very interested and said, "We have some babies here that were born in the prison; can you take them too?"  Compasio then faced the challenge of only having days to find a home for the children, because the prison only gave them until March 5.
